NC Regionals 2016

The NC 4A West Regional race completed the season for Watauga.  Rotten luck had the boys finish in a tie for 4th, only 1 pt. behind third.  The tie breaker was not in their favor and the season ended without a repeat trip to the state meet.  Josh paced the squad with a 17th place finish, followed immediately by Avery, then Price, River, and Grant to complete the scoring.  Sam and Elias also ran with sub-18 PR's.  The girl's squad finished 11th in the region and were led by Anna, Rebecca, Emma T., Finley, and Kate scoring and Samara and Emma B. also competing. Complete race results here.  Photos of the event here.  Congratulations to River, Grant, Sam, Finley and all the rest of the 2017 seniors on fine Watauga XC careers.

Conference Championship

The varsity boys squad placed five scoring runners in the top ten to easily retain the conference title in a reportedly hotly contested race.  Conditions were quite warm (for mid-October) but the partly shady, flat, fast track led to many season and career PR marks.  Price finished as the individual Northwestern Conference champ and Josh earned a 3rd place podium finish.  Also scoring for the squad where Avery, Grant, and Elias.  Anna paced the conference runner-up varsity girls squad with 4th place finish.  Also scoring for the squad where Emma B., Rebecca, Finley, and Sophia.  The margin between conference champ and runner-up was only seven points! Complete conference results are here.  A few photos of the girls race here.

Most runners have now completed the season but varsity squads will continue to prepare for the NC 4A regional in Charlotte next weekend and a chance to qualify for the state championships.

NC Runner's Elite

Hurricane driven storm conditions -at least it was relatively warm- could not stop Price from delivering a top ten finish from a small, but spirited field in the marquee division at the Runner's Elite Invitational.  Anna recorded the fastest time of the girls finishers.  Also notable was Avery placing 7th (though the first 9th grade finisher) in the boy's freshman/sophomore race and Emma B. 17th in the same girls race.  Complete race results here.  A few photos of the even here.  The team now has final preparation for the conference championship race and qualification for the state championships -maybe it won't rain next time we're in Kernersville!

Knights Crossing Invitational

This meet in Salem, VA was the first "big-time" invitational of the season.  Overall times for many may have been a bit slower than last year likely due to very warm temperatures at race starts.  The varsity girls squad improved on last years finish and delivered a team 17th place (out of 27 teams) with Emma B. as the first Watauga runner across the line followed by Rebecca, Anna, Emma T., and Finley scoring for the Pioneers.  The boys squad moved up two places to finish 5th (out of 33 teams) this year and were led by Josh, followed immediately by Price and River, Avery (who had the 2nd fastest freshman runner finish on the day), and Elias scoring.  Sam led the boys and Samara the girls in the JV race.  Full results are posted here.  Photos of the varsity races here.  Those athletes not traveling to Salem this weekend will be competing Tuesday at Ashe County High.

Caldwell County Invitational

Athletes (and coaches and parents) were greeted with low 90's and bright sun; pretty much an exact copy of the last two years.  Varsity and JV boys and girls teams all won their respective races.  River led the varsity boys with a first place finish, followed by Price, Josh, Avery, and Elias with a near perfect team score.  Emma B. was the first Watauga varsity girls finisher in 4th place, followed by Rebecca, Finley, Emma T., and Ella.  The JV boys and girls did manage perfect teams scores in their races and were led by Sam, Evan, Sam, Michael, and Alex for the boys and Kate, Samara, Mary, Molly, and Angela for the girls.  Complete results here.  Photos of the event here.  Good luck to varsity and seniors headed to Salem, VA for the Knights Crossing Invitational on Saturday.

Run for the Hills Meet

The first 5K race of the season had a little bit of everything:  ditch, unmarked holes, slick grass, a narrow track in some places, and a serious hill between the first and second mile.  Emma B. (22:22) finished in 10th place to lead the girls varsity squad followed by Rebecca, Sophie, Emma T. and Anna scoring for a third place team finish -the first podium in some time.  Molly and Catie also ran for the varsity squad and finished in the top half of all finishers on the tough course.  The boys were led by River's (17:23) 6th place finish, followed by Josh, Price, Avery, and John scoring for a second place team finish.  Grant and Elias also competed for the varsity squad and finished just behind John in the top quarter of all finishers.  As has been the trend in recent years, new freshmen runners (Rebecca, Sophie, Catie, and Avery) made solid contributions in their first high school 5K.  Complete results are posted here.  Photos of the event are here.  Fortunately the high school races went off first as the temperature and the crowds soared later for the middle school and elementary races.  Team will have 10 days of practice until the Caldwell Invitational in Lenoir on 9/7.

XC Regionals 2015: Watauga Boys Return to State

In a race filled with career PR's, a pair of senior runners delivered 'out of their minds' performances to ensure a return trip to the state meet.  Matthew delivered a career PR and team season best of 16:30 to pace the boys with a team best 6th place finish, while Devin continued the season long PR assault by removing another minute or so from his PR and was personally witnessed to pass at least a half-dozen competitors in the final push to the line as the 5th scoring Watauga runner.  In between Josh and Price went about establishing sub-17 career PR's and Grant powered to a strong finish.  Only injury to season leader, River, likely prevented the team for challenging for a regional championship.  Sam and River also competed with the varsity squad.  This crew will be racing in Kernersville again next week!

The Watauga girls varsity squad was led by Emma B who recorded a career PR (21:26) and 54th place finish.  Finley and Ella continued a return to form from injury and posted strong season best finishes.  Emma T. and Anna completed the scoring for varsity team.  Nicole and Molly also competed for the varsity squad.  Ladies your preparation to regain the conference championship begins now!  Complete race results can be found here.  Photos of the event here.
