WATAUGA
HIGH CROSS COUNTRY
2016 Freshman Information
I would like to welcome
you to the Watauga High Cross Country team. We do not make cuts. If you make the
practices, you will run in most of the meets. Do not compare yourself to others
on the team. We have runners who have run for several years and we have runners
who had not run at all when they started. Practices consist of 3-12 miles of
running. As a newcomer, you will be in the 3 mile range. We will not jump up a
lot in your freshman year so we can prevent injuries. When school starts we will practice
Monday-Friday 3:55-5:30 (occasionally longer).
Date of 1st official
practice: August 1st at 5:30pm at
Jack Groce Stadium. Plan to be there. We will practice at 5:30pm each evening
until school starts.
Our summer
training will begin on June 20th at 8:30 am. We will go Monday, Tuesday, and
Thursday all summer. Make any and all that you can. The summer practices are
not required but are a chance for you to run with your future teammates. We
hope you will be able to run 30 minutes without stopping by the time you get to
practice on August 3.
There will
be 2 weeks this summer that coaches cannot meet with you. This is called a
“dead period”. Those weeks are July 4-8 and July 18-22. Hopefully our upperclassmen will schedule some running times
those weeks.
All
participants will need to have their completed
physicals before any practice including summer workouts.
If you are a beginning runner, you
can contact me for a program to get you started.
