XC Season is over. The running continues.

Congratulations on a fine year, especially to the Watauga Seniors for a string of good years.

(By the way, 2011 graduate Daniel Osborne was 29th in the Open race Saturday, with a 16:24.)

Keep running and see Coach Honea's blog.  This website will restart about May or so.  Have a great winter.

Foot Locker results -- Updates

See Coach Honea's post on today's races.  Darby Middlebrook repeated her Wendy's 17:36 at McAlpine in today's Foot Locker South meet.  It was good for 12th.  Two NC Girls runners, Samantha George and Alana Hadley, finished in the top 10 to qualify for the Nationals.  Girls Seeded results.

Peter ran a 15:53, Josh 16:23 PR, AndrewV 16:32.  Two NC Boys runners, Thomas Graham and Mark Blackmon, qualified for the Nationals.  Boys Seeded results.

NC Runners has lots of video of seeded races and interviews.

Foot Locker Saturday at McAlpine, also a look at NCAA

Meet page and MileSplit page.

NC Runners top NC runners participating.   The NC races within the races should be very interesting.
All NC runners--Lots of runners list that they're from Boone, but there are also runners from Deep Gap and Zionville.  Zionville is fast.

There's another race Saturday too.

Also, Coach Honea reports on the NCAA I meet:  Wisconsin and Georgetown win.  Other reports: ESPN and Let's Run Men and Women.

Comment on NCRunners about last Saturday's race: "it was cool to see some more well known names like Maxey and Vandenberg there."

Run on Thanksgiving Day at the Greenway!

Coach Honea suggests running the Turkey Trot on Thursday.  The Boone event, which raises money for the Hospitality House, starts at 8:00 and 8:30am on the Greenway at the Armory.  It's going to be a little more than a 5K.  The 8:00 start is for competitive runners and the 8:30 is really a "walk/jog/stroll."  Everyone is welcome, even dogs on a leash.

Another 2 mile race on an oval -- Update

Another 2 mile race on an oval brought out Watauga boys:
Peter  9:49, Josh  9:56, Brian  10:34 , Quentin Vandenberg  10:44, Madison Jacob Soulé  11:13 , Matthew  11:25
(rounding down to the second)
NC Runners complete results: "In the boys' fastest race, Wyatt Maxey hung in behind the leaders for five laps before moving into the lead.  He had to battle Peter Vandenberg over laps 6 and 7 before he was able to secure the win."

Update:  Quentin Vandenberg is actually a runner from Central Cabarrus HS.  Sounds like he should be from Watauga.  Matt Osborne, at least the one who ran this race and spells his name without the final e, is probably from Lake Norman Charter School.  Ooops!
NC Runners lists several Soules, but no Madison Soule, so for now, Jacob Soulé will get credit for the 11:13 on this website.

All-Observer honors, A look at next year

The Charlotte Observer:  "Watauga's Darby Middlebrook is the girls' runner of the year. She had the third best 5K (17:35) in the Carolinas and was N.C. 4A runner-up. She also won a conference and regional championship."
Also, Peter is First Team All-Observer: "Peter Vandenberg, Watauga, Jr.: 5K best of 15:49; N.C. 4A all-state (eighth), 4A West Region runner-up and won Northwestern 3A/4A."
And Josh and Madison are on their Second Team All-Observer.  Hannah is on their Third Team.
(Thanks NC Prep Track.)

NC Runners looks at Boys and Girls teams for next year.  Much like Coach Honea's analysis of this year's Boys results minus Seniors.  Watauga Boys have the best 4A time, 3rd in points.  Green Hope Girls again look disturbingly strong.  In any case, might as well keep running and see what happens.

No stories from the Banquet, but it must have been happy.

Foot Locker is coming up a week from Saturday at McAlpine.  Update: Look at list of runners, including additions in comments: (besides Watauga's) Frazier, Hadley, George, Greengrass, Blackmon, Rains, Engels, and other top state runners.   They should be great races, but watch the intra-NC competition too.

Update: Samantha George to NC State? Hope they cleared that with Coach Honea.  (NCPrepTrack again, N&O)

Not XC, but worth noting

In the 2 mile, on an oval at Reagan High School, Hannah and Madison win 3rd and 4th, behind Anna McBride (11:11) and Ashley Brubaker (on her home track).  In the boys', Craig Engels won with 9:03.  Complete results later.
Update:  NCRunners has results.
Coach Honea reports: PR 10:08.6 for Andrew.  "Probably the fastest last lap Hannah has ever run."  She ran a 11:34 and Madison 11:37.

Update Monday:  NC Runners has recap with photos and video.

More events and one more look back

Some of Watauga's top runners have been spotted at swim practice.  More than expected.

Looking ahead:
The cross country team is done for the year but several individual runners will be running Friday night on a track at Reagan Two Mile Tune-Up.  One former Watauga runner (now at NCSSM) will be there.  NC Runners Preview.
Then comes the big Foot Locker South Regional meet in Charlotte--McAlpine on November 26.  About 15 Watauga athletes ran at that meet last year.  People come from all over the region: Texas, Kentucky, Virginia, Florida.

Banquet Monday night, 11/14.

Looking back at the state meet:  Honea Boys' video, Honea Girls' video, Honea Boys' analysis, Honea Girls' analysis.  Also, see the NC Runners recap (again).
Meet officials corrected several runners' times.  Madison ran a PR 18:42, in addition to Bryan's PR 16:34!
Also, Honea looks ahead to next year's Boys' meet.

Looking back even further, to 2010: "Last year, the Watauga girls ran the fourth-best average time in state meet history" and "Peaking at the right time? Help from front runners? A much improved #5? All these things gave Watauga the advantage over some of the other teams hoping to pull off the runner-up spot."  NC Runners link.

And looking back even farther, to races at McAlpine over the years (from NC Prep Track), Watauga is 3rd in both Boys and Girls.  Among Watauga's top times ever at McAlpine: Vandenberg, Middlebrook, Barbour, Harman.

Reflect on a good season, and keep running

As always, see Coach Honea's blog and the NC Runners' recap.

Reviewing the State Championships

News reports: Go Blue Ridge (Saturday report): " "The course really started taking its toll on me. I wasn't sure if I could finish. But I just pushed myself. I wanted to finish in the top ten." "
News&Observer: "Teams and runners from all over the state gutted out the muddy course . . . "
Update W-S Journal: " "I gave it my all today and I am happy with that. It was sort of near the two-mile. She put in a surge before we went up that long uphill. I had to go after her." "

NC Runners photos: Darby at about the midpoint one mile mark in the race: 1, 2, 3

A hard day: Girls 5th, Boys 6th, Darby 2nd, Peter 8th

Despite improving on her record-breaking time in winning the 4A championship last year, Darby Middlebrook came in 2nd today.  Madison Harman almost matched her PR, missing by less than a second, and improved on her time in last year's race by 21 seconds.  She came in 14th.  The Watauga Girls team came in 5th, but could not repeat last year's surprise 2nd place.

The Boys improved to 6th this year.  Peter Vandenberg won 8th place and Josh Anderson 15th.  Bryan Brackney improved his PR by more than 10 seconds.  Early in the race, it almost looked as if they might win it all.  Watauga can only be pleased at the way the Boys have finished the season.

Boys results. Fixed these two links.
Girls results.
GoBlueRidge reports.  There will be much more Sunday.

Go Watauga!

Congratulations to Watauga Seniors: Hannah, Hailey, Molly, Julia, Taylor, Andrew, and Robert.

The first results late this afternoon should be on NCRunners Twitter feed.  Maybe here too.  The NC Runners meet page should have full results this evening.  Update: The NC Runner Twitter reports are going straight to the NC Runners page.  Reports on the morning races are there already.

Parking and directions  and G. Map

Mud?  Yes, with almost 2 inches of rain, but sounds like they worked pretty hard on the course.

Calmness: "It’s not fun to go up there with a season on the line. But you know, I think the experience is incredible.”

Not for fun races Saturday (but maybe it will be fun anyway)

NC Runners still has no now has its Preview up for the 4A races, but we know what to expect.  Be sure to see Coach Honea's FlashbackThese people may be heard from too.  These too.  And these (another misspelling, but also a shot of Peter).

4A Regional Championships, McAlpine Park, Charlotte, Saturday

Here's a look at last year's regional and state races:  Boys regional and state, girls regional and state.  Coach Honea has another set of year-to-year results for Watauga runners at the Conference meets in Lenoir.

#1 runner.  NC Runners has Darby Middlebrook ahead of other strong 4A runners: George, Kramer, Foreman, McBride, Gordon, and others.  Kramer, Foreman, and Gordon will be at the Regional.
Update: Boys: Peter #9 in 4A.

Not much detail yet, but here are links to this year's Regional and State meets.  They do not yet announce times for this Saturday.  For State, the following Saturday, one of the comments says the 4A times will be: 4A Men 3:30 p.m.; 4A Women 4:30 p.m.  NC Prep Track also has those State 4A times.

Thanks from Coach Mac, upcoming events, and video from Conference races

From WXC Boosters:

Coach Mac sends the following thanks:
I want to thank everyone for all the help this (last) weekend for the fair. We had great crews working and sold almost 500 hotdogs. It was very intensive but well worth the time as we raised almost $2000 in 7 hours + a few staying after and picking up and emptying garbage.
Also thank you in advance to all who are working concessions Friday night at the football game.
Coach Mac

The Cross Country Senior Recognition Banquet is coming up November 14.  Information on planning and volunteering for that event.
Coach Honea has videos and splits from the Conference Meet: Girls and Boys.

It's still a long way out, but the forecast is for a nice day in Charlotte for the Regional meet, October 29.

He still might need a few tents, too.

Elementary & Middle School Races, Have a tent?

Fast races this afternoon.  One of the highlights was seeing 4 Vandenbergs running together.  Holden Perry (Tailwinds) won the 1st-3rd grade race by a large margin.  Mary Louise Sprague (Tailwinds) held off a pack of fast boys to win the 4th-6th grade race.  Aaron Dobbins (High Country Runners) kept up a strong pace to win the 7th-8th grade race.
Coach Mac is looking for a couple of tents for the race tomorrow.  It looks like it might rain.

Wednesday details -- NW 3A/4A Conference Meet

From WXC Boosters and Coach Mac:

Here's the schedule for Wednesday:
5:00 PM- Men's Race
5:40 PM- Women's Race
Remind your runner that the weather is going to be considerably colder Wednesday.

Our volunteers sold almost 500 hotdogs Saturday at Valle Crucis!

Kids' races this afternoon

The Elementary and Middle School races, postponed from last week, happen today.  This was to be the schedule last week, so it's a good bet for today:

4:00 pm            co-ed race for 1st – 3rd graders
4:25 pm            co-ed race race for 4th – 6th graders
4:50 pm            co-ed race for 7th & 8th graders
From WXC Boosters: " We will be practicing around and helping with those. Runners should get dressed and get down to the covered bridge as soon as they can."
From Coach Honea: "Tues – regular Tuesday workout.  Medium run, strides, circuits.  People who are finished racing after Wednesday will only run about 15 minutes."
(Honea also has an interesting post today on opportunities to continue team running.)

This week -- Practice 6:00pm Monday, Conference Wednesday UPDATES

Practice is on the track at 6:00 on Monday.  See Honea's "What we want".

Elementary & Middle School races Tuesday afternoon.  It's probably too late to sign up, but it might be worth asking still.

Wednesday – Conference championship at LenoirFirst race at 4:30.
 Update (from WXC Boosters):
Wednesday is a big day. We will be in Lenoir for the Northwestern Conference CC Championships. Runners will get out of class at 2:15 and buses will depart at 2:30.
Right now the races are at 5:00 and 5:30 with boys 1st. I will let you know if anything changes (in the past we have run at 4:30 and 5:15).
This will be the last meet for most of team.

Interested in concessions on Friday?

Update (more from WXC Boosters):
We will cut down to the top 9 or 10 runners on each team for regionals which is Saturday, October 29.

I will be sending out info on the Footlocker Nat'ls soon. We will be taking a group down to the Southeast Regional on Friday Nov. 25. The races are Saturday the 26th. For info on Footlocker, go to footlackercc.com You can register there for the races.

Also be looking for info on the end of season banquet. It should be the week of Nov. 14. Come out and help us celebrate the season.

Update 3:30pm (not from WXC Boosters): We were hoping that we would see the President running on the Greenway with his top Secret Service runners, toward the High School.  He was going to shower and meet his motorcade there.  But it is believed that he was running late (or heard that Watauga's practice was delayed).  They decided to drive instead.

MileStat.com Review

Monday practice will be at 6:00pm, not immediately after school (dismissing at 1:00pm).  Due to unannounced events.  And for most runners, only 3 more days with teammates and coaches, at least for this season..

In Virginia, a beautiful day, but a competitive field, on the road, with lots of teammates missing.  Strong performances by key runners. The Varsity teams were just barely off their Wendy's pace.  Overall, a good performance with a lot of promise.
Varsity Boys
Varsity Girls
JV A Boys
JV Girls

News reports: from Richmond. Update: and from GoBlue Ridge. Sophie Chase broke the previous meet record by 20 seconds and last year's winner and previous record-breaker, Megan Moye, by 18 seconds.

Update:  All these photos had been available, but are no longer viewable without a subscription.  Too bad.
Good action photos: Peter, on his way to a PR. KickingAvery and Josh finishing. Darby at the start and with a crowd of her new friends (Chase691, Moye337).  Later in the race and finishing.  They missed Hannah, but here's a wonderful, painful shot of Madison finishingHailey's relief.  Here's Hannah, and Madison and Hailey again.

MileStat.com meet, rainbows

Two rainbows over Watauga this afternoon.  I wonder if there were a 3rd and 4th.

Coach Honea reviews information on the Virginia teams and runners.
Also, see this Richmond news report: "defending champion Stafford will be boys teams to watch."  "Cosby's Megan Moye will return with the chance to defend her 2010 Invitational title, which she won in a meet-record 17 minutes, 42 seconds. Scheduled to attend is Lake Braddock, which has the state's current leader for the girls in junior Sophie Chase."
MileStat webpage about the meet.  Good luck with parking and don't bring your dog.

In case you're staying home this weekend, there are still a few needs and jobs.  Also, from WXC Boosters:
Anyone who still needs to bring stuff for the Valle Country Fair can drop it by Hardin Park or WHS and leave it in the office.
Also we need anyone who can show up at 4:15 to the fair (traffic will be better then) to help clean-up from the fair.  They pay the team to do this.

United Way results, POSTPONED Elementary & Middle School XC Championships, Friday change

NC Runners' results for United Way Invitational are not yet posted.
Update:  Coach Honea has the times: Girls, Boys.  "Big run for Jacob, who fought for the win in the Open race and got major PR while finishing second."
Update:  NC Prep Track has full results.
Update:  NC Runners has posted results.

Unless the event is rescheduled due to possible rain (that's attempted dry humor, by the way), there will be elementary and middle school races on the Greenway this afternoon, starting at 4:00pm.
Update:  GoBlueRidge reports that this race is POSTPONED until next Tuesday.

Buses are leaving 11:00am Friday morning.  Note that this is an hour later than the originally scheduled time.  Bring $80 check to "Watauga CC," if not already done.  Also, Friday lunch, money for meals, and (of course) snacks.

Obviously, there's a lot going on today:

Big non-Watauga Cross Country event in Kernersville.

Wednesday's pre-conference meet in Lenoir--Boys win, Girls 2nd, Results!

The Watauga Girls did not win today's meet at Lenoir.  They came in second to Alexander Central.  No firm information on the Boys.

Official results might appear on NC Runners page for the meet, but they're no longer including it on lists on their main page.

Update:  Looks like Wednesday's meet is disappearing.  Probably a good idea here too.

Update: Coach Honea has results.  The Boys win, without its top runners. Lots of sub-20s.  The Girls were missing their top runners too, but Anna won 2nd place and a PR.  "A lot of people who had big PR’s at Wendy’s ran their second-best time ever, which is a good sign."

Compared to the September 6 race on the same course, Jacob dropped his time 65 seconds, Zak H. 88 seconds, Shelby 62 seconds, and Juliana 61 seconds.

Making sense of the schedule

In case the schedule is not clear for the rest of the season.  Also see Coach Honea for details on practices.

Wednesday, 5th    Pre-Conference Meet, Lenoir
Most runners will participate, except for the top 7-10 of Girls and Boys teams.
Update: The bus leaves at 2:45pm.  No times for today's races have been posted. Last month in Lenoir they were 5:00, 5:30, 6:00, and 6:30.  The bus returned to WHS at 9:45pm or so.
Better update(from Boosters and Honea): Races at 4:30 and 5:00.  Probably Boys first.  Just 2 races.  No separate JV races.  Buses are likely to leave Lenoir around 6:00 and come straight back to WHS.

***Buy your Watauga Pioneer CC shirts, sweats, shorts, sweatpants, and blankets by Tuesday, 11th.

Wednesday, 12th   United Way Meet, Newton
Most runners will participate, possibly except the top 7-10 runners  Update:  Everyone runs.

Saturday, 15th   MileStat.com Invitational, Richmaond, VA
About half of the team is going.  (Lots of runners are taking the PSAT.)
***The volunteer opportunity at the Valle Crucis Fair is also on this date.  Here's link to volunteer.

Wednesday, 19th   Conference Championships, Lenoir
Everyone runs.
"That will finish the season for everyone except the top 8 from the team. That group will continue practicing. Everyone else will be done with practice."

Saturday, 29th   Western Regional Championships, Charlotte (McAlpine)
Top 8 from each team (If we qualify, but that's highly probable.)

Saturday, November 5   State Championships,  Kernersville
Top 8 from each team (If we qualify, but that's probable, considering how the team has been running.)

Fundraising and other events

We have a meet in Lenoir Wednesday.

From Watauga Cross Country Boosters:
"A new fundraiser.  We are selling Watauga Pioneer CC shirts, sweats, shorts, sweatpants, and blankets.  Try to get family and friends to support us not only monetarily but by wearing our clothing proudly."

"The Valle Country Fair fundraiser coming up October 15.  Watauga Cross Country sells hot dogs and does some clean-up at the fair.  Last year we made almost $1500 doing this.  We will need kids and parents to sell and kids to help clean-up.  Look for the sign-up genius coming out soon."

Update: Here's link to volunteer.

Week in Review -- What a week!

NC Runners has its Week 7 in Review up.

Wednesday -- Pre-Conference Meet, in Lenoir

The team, possibly minus some top runners, will compete in Lenoir Wednesday afternoon at the Northwestern 3A/4A Pre Conference Meet.

Looking back at the great weekend, Coach Honea looks at the big jumps in PRs.  "For the boys, 36 of 42 people got new PR’s.  For the girls, 23 out of 32 runners improved their PR’s. On both teams, 18 people PR’d by more than a minute."  Led by David, Caleb W., Travis, Hannah H., and Taylor W.

NC Runners' Week 7 in Review.
Middlebrook ran the second fastest Wendy's time ever, by a second (Ooops, that is, by 4 seconds).  The 17:32 Girls Wendys' record is held by a South Carolina runner, Kate Niehaus.  That's why it's not on the NC HS list (coming up next).
NC PrepTrack lists the fastest North Carolina high school McAlpine times, from over the many years.  Most of these top times are from later season events.  But the Girls list now includes lots of times from this weekend.  (The Boys includes several Watauga names.)
DyeStat has Wendy's summary, with a photo of the Girls Invitational winner.

Update:  GoBlueRidge report, "Landshark" photos, and video from WNCPrepTrack.  (Thanks NCPrepTrack)

Teams: Girls 5th and Boys 11th

Coach Honea has more results and is pleased.  The Watauga Girls placed 5th and the Boys 11th in large, very competitive races.  The Girls were not far off 2nd place, and the Boys moved up from last year.  He has most of the splits already posted.  "Ten miles of running to get the splits today."

The complete team results are now up on results pages.  See links in Saturday's post below.
Boys: 1. Chapel Hill, 2. Mt. Tabor, 3. Ardrey Kell, . . . 10. TC Roberson, 11.Watauga, 12. Myers Park
Girls:  1. Ardrey Kell, 2. TC Roberson, 3. Wando (SC) 191 points, 4. Chapel Hill 209, 5. Watauga 210, 6. Myers Park 213

Update: There's Darby on NC Runners' main page.  And their summary: "Though challenged through the first half of the race, Darby Middlebrook was able to pull away from a pack . . . "

There was a race in Cary yesterday too.

Darby 17:36!

(Time corrected from 17:33)

Middlebrook wins with 17:33, ahead of Ardrey Kell and TC Roberson runners: Foreman 17:50, Gordon 17:54.  Ardrey Kell wins the Girls' Invitational, followed by TC Roberson.  From NC Runners.

That 17:33 is just one second off the meet record.  (Or is it 3 seconds off the new record set last night by a high school freshman in the college race?)  Update: Fastest HS girls times on the course, not including this weekend.  Update: These don't quite match up and there's a new time for Darby on NC Runners' results, 17:36.  In any case, Darby was fast.

Mitch McLeod of Chapel Hill won the Boys' with a 15:33.

Should find more results here anytime now.

Update: No results yet, but a cyclist used to a quieter days in McAlpine Park reports, "I’ve never seen so many people converge on the McAlpine . . . a good average speed was impossible, I decided instead to enjoy the atmosphere."  Thanks for sharing your park, Charlotte.

Update with results:
Boys Invitational : Peter and Josh, 15th and 16th, 16:07 and 16:09
Girls Invitational :  Darby, 1st, 15:36; Madison, 15th, 18:50
Boys Junior/Senior :  Luke, 12th, 17:31; DylanL, 27th, 17:59
Boys Frosh/Soph :  Andrew and Matt, 20th and 21st, 17:40 and 17:41; Will, 29th, 17:54

The Wendy's Invitational, this Saturday

The Wendy's announcement, with full schedule, and the NC Runners page

That Girls Individual Race (12:15pm UPDATE:  OOops, 12:30pm) is going to be big.  There were almost 500 last year (in a Freshman/Sophomore race and a separate Junior/Senior race).  And 556 in a combined race in 2009.  It's going to be combined again this year.  All of Watauga's girls, except for the top 7, will be running all together in that race.

Be sure to read Coach Honea's assessment:  Boys, Girls.

Key times for Watauga (Thanks WCC Boosters):
5:45am   Buses leave WHS
9:00am   Arrive at course
10:00am   Women’s Invitational (Darby M., Madison H., Hailey M., Hannah B., Doria K., Taylor N., Molly R.)
10:30am    Men’s Invitational (Peter V., Andrew V., Josh A., Bryan B., Dustin H., Avery P., Michael H.)
12:00 noon    Men’s Individual Freshmen/Sophomores
12:30pm    Women’s Individual (all classes)
1:00pm   Men’s Individual Junior/Senior

There will be other races.  (Know your time.  Know the course.)

Directions (or try Google page)
Wendy's Invitational (8711 Monroe Rd., Charlotte, NC)
North from I-77...take Brookshire Freeway (I-277) exit east to Independence Blvd. Follow Independence Blvd. east (approx. 6 miles) until Village Lake Drive. Turn right onto Village Lake Drive. Travel on Village Lake Drive for less than a mile until it dead ends into Monroe Road. Turn left onto Monroe Road and McAlpine Creek Park will be less than a mile on your left (just before Railroad overpass).

UPDATE (Thanks WCC Boosters and WendyV): "Usually if you go past the entrance to the park on your left, you will find overflow parking on the left at a shopping center just up the road.  It is much easier to get in and out if you park there.  Most of the time volunteers with vests will tell you where you can park - the businesses that are not open on Saturdays.  After you park, you just follow the others down a bank and go to the right at the bottom.  After you pass the train trestle, you will keep walking and usually see Watauga's tent on the left.  The starting line and finish will be straight ahead."

And a map of McAlpine Park.  It has 5k course marked, but does not show start or finish.  UPDATE:  Her's a better link to the map.  But maybe this one will be more useful.

Vandenberg, Middlebrook

Having a great season already, with lots ahead.  Bryan and Anna also won the JV races, and Madison and Josh had a strong races.

Go Blue Ridge reports on Saturday's meet.

NC Runners has Week 6 in Review.

UPDATE:  In the Open 5K, unofficially, Tailwinds beat unattached.  By my count.  It was close.  And fast.
Also, unofficially, in the Open 2 mile race, Lincoln Charter edged Galax.  Tailwinds and unattached also ran strong races.

2nd UPDATE:  And  H. Perry wins WXC.net's Runner of the Meet for his 22:12 for 3rd place in the Open 5K.

Our last home meet  is Saturday.  Don't forget the open race and kids' race at 9:00 and 9:30.  "Tell your friends, parents, and neighbors to come."  There will be volunteer opportunities too.

Elsewhere (especially Wilmington)

Coach Honea reports on other meets around the region.  The Seahawk Invitational in Wilmington had lots of top teams, including Ardrey Kell and Green Hope.  NC Runners has full coverage (UPDATE: good free photos here, but we'll be seeing these teams in person soon enough).  Other meets included TC Roberson at Spartanburg.

Also, ASU  is having another meet this Friday, 9/16, at 5:00PM, at the Greenway.

Friday, September 9, 2011

Looking ahead

The next meet is here in Boone next Wednesday afternoon.

And then after 10 days without a meet, we have a larger meet here on Saturday, 9/24.  That includes an open race at 9:00am.  (That means open to the public, that is, parents, not to JV runners.)  Also, a middle school race at 9:40am.  Question -- Do runners in the open  and middle school races need to sign up early?  The middle school race is free.

The Wendy's Invitational will be the following Saturday, October 1st, in Charlotte.  A good meet to watch.  NC Runners' page.

The comments requirements on this site have been eased, so if anybody has anything to add . . .

Good Results

NC Runners has posted results from today's meet.  4 team wins in 4 races, with North Lincoln coming in 2nd in each.  The Varsity Boys was very close.  Watauga had 3 individual wins: VandenbergP, MiddlebrookD, and Roberts.  In results for the open races, you see Watauga all over the top (and really, all over the whole lists, top to bottom).

Wednesday -- Caldwell County Meet

Last year, 32 teams competed in this meet (Note - This link is to last year's meet and results).  We'll see how many can make it this year, after a day's delay.  Races at 5:00. 5:30, 6:00, and 6:30pm.  (Note: That means bus will not be back to WHS before 8:00pm.  And be sure to have a hot supper ready.)

Update Wed. 9/7 7:40pm:  Don't rush to the high school to meet the bus.  Awards just starting.  My estimate: arrive around 9:00pm.  But I'm always early.

Tuesday meet postponed until Wednesday

The meet in Lenoir is now scheduled for Wednesday.  There will be practice this afternoon.

Do we still have enough drivers?  http://www.signupgenius.com/go/transportation24

Update 6:00pm -- Looks like 25 seats for the trip to Lenoir, but only 21 for return.
And lots of slots for selling concessions Thursday 5:00-9:30pm.

And did you see Who to Watch in NC?  Nobody from WHS, this week, but still interesting.

Monday, September 5, 2011

Tuesday -- Be ready to run

It might rain Tuesday.  OK, it might rain a lot.  If there is no lightning and no flooding, the race will still happen.  The first race is scheduled for 5:00PM and the last at 6:30PM.  See Coach Honea's blog for many details.  There's a chance of racing on time, of racing late, of having practice instead, and of not knowing what's going to happen.

Come prepared for a wet day, whenever (and wherever) you run.

And don't forget about volunteering Thursday. Lots of slots left, so far.

Directions:  Caldwell County Cross County Invitational (Soccer Complex, Lenoir).
From Boone, take highway 321 through Blowing Rock to Lenoir. Take a left at Nuway Circle (stoplight before Bo's, before you get to Walmart).  Go approx. 0.5 miles and turn right onto Zack Forks Road which will take you to the soccer complex (on your right) and the start and finish of the race.  (Or type "1050 Zacks Fork Road" into Google Maps or other.)

Last week's relays -- more results

Go Blue Ridge had some results from Northwestern Relays also. Congratulations, Cambodia and Clementines.

Saturday, September 3, 2011

Thursday, September 1, 2011

Partial results, looking ahead

From yesterday's relays, here are Coach Honea's results, for Watauga runners (not teams).

The Caldwell County Invitational is coming up next Tuesday in Lenoir.  It will start an hour or so after school.

There are two more events still to come in Boone, on September 14 and the High Country Classic, on September 24.

Update:  It looks like official results might not be posted for Wednesday's relays.  It was a fun event.  Several A few other schools did show up: including Hickory, South Caldwell, and Avery Alexander (right? Update: Nope. Wrong again.  It was Alexander.  See this GBR story.), but it had the feel of an intrasquad competition.

Monday, August 29, 2011

NW Conference Relays Wednesday

The Northwestern Conference Relays will be this Wednesday, August 31, 4:30-6:30pm.  At the Greenway.

Sunday, August 28, 2011

Another look at Hendersonville Championship races

A review of the championship races, by NC Runners.  Lots of photos of the leaders.

More results and reports

Coach Honea reviews the meet and includes times, splits, and correct names.  "A couple of great races in the invitational race by girls running their first high school 5k (and a second place team finish by our second seven)."

Go Blue Ridge reports "then she turned it on."  "The Pioneers had four runners in the top five. Hannah Barbour was third (18:26.02), Madison Harman was 15th (20:07.52) and Hailey Middlebrook was 19th (20:12.59)."  "The WHS boys won the open race by besting the field with 64 points."  Chasteen, Brackney, Boyette, Allain, and Howell all in the top 21 finishers.

The Asheville Citizen-Times quotes 2nd place finisher, Brooke Gordon, "There’s no one I would rather run against than (Middlebook). She’s such a great competitor."  Photos especially 9,17,27,29

Lots of Video from wncpreptrack.

There's another meet coming up Wednesday, at the the Greenway at 4:30pm.
